Yinka Shonibare CBE Modern Spiritual

Yinka Shonibare CBE was born in London in 1963. His interdisciplinary practice incorporates painting, sculpture, prints, photography and film.

Yinka Shonibare CBE was born in London in 1963 and moved to Nigeria aged three. His interdisciplinary practice incorporates painting, sculpture, prints, photography and film. Through examining race, class and the construction of cultural identity, his work comments on the tangled interrelationship between Africa and Europe, and their respective economic and political histories.

Shonibare was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2004, and his first public art commission was displayed on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square in 2010. Shonibare’s works are in notable museum collections throughout the world.

The exhibition coincides with a solo exhibition of his work at Serpentine South Gallery in London. He is also one of the eight artists selected for the Nigerian Pavilion at the 2024 Venice Biennale.
