Waterline 2022, the second in a long-term collaboration between two like-minded artists, Tricia Scott and Lois Wakeman, is a fascinating exhibition of contemporary abstract photography that features the weathered and textured surfaces of boats.

Tricia Scott (ARPS) and Lois Wakeman (LRPS) discovered they share an uncannily similar view of the world soon after they first met. Lois says “We both lived in Devon and spent many happy days out on photographic forays in the Southwest, until Tricia moved to the USA at the end of last year, leaving me to carry on the project this side of the Atlantic.”

Both like to look for abstract photographs – things that many people would walk past, or over, unseeing. Living by the coast, seaside subjects naturally suggested themselves. For this show they have chosen a small series of abstract photographs of boat hulls out of the water.

Visitors are invited to lose themselves in imaginary scenes created by peeling paint, corrosion and worn wood and to admire the surprising patterns revealed when the boats are hauled out of water for the winter, ready for a fresh coat of paint. Intrigued by the abstract and painterly nature of the photos, visitors to previous shows have enjoyed reading their own interpretation into them. “Are you sure these aren’t paintings?” is a common reaction.
