Romancing the Line: A celebration of figurative art on paper
Hidden Gallery to exhibit ‘Romancing the Line,’ an exclusive collection of figurative artworks that span over 100 years.
Hidden Gallery is thrilled to announce its latest exhibition, ‘Romancing the Line’. From Thursday 15th August to Sunday 15th September, Hidden will exhibit a collection of works on paper that demonstrate the extraordinary draughtsmanship of artists such as Tracey Emin, David Hockney, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Gustav Klimt, Keith Haring, L.S Lowry and many more.
‘Figurative art’ is a term used to describe artworks that portray identifiable subjects, particularly the human figure. “Figurative art has a long and rich history of holding up a mirror to both construct and dismantle our sense of self,” said Amy Hampshire, senior manager of Hidden Gallery, Bristol. “On one hand, Tracey Emin’s emotionally wrought figures confront the stark reality of being human – fallible and sensitive. On the other, Henry Moore’s more abstract reclining figures draw attention to our tangible, physical being.”
As a term, ‘figurative art’ was popularised following the rise of abstract art, where traditional depictions of the human body were critically neglected in favour of other avant-garde movements. The artists featured in ‘Romancing the Line’ helped to reinvigorate the genre.
Collectors and enthusiasts alike are invited to witness Hidden’s exclusive new collection of artworks. Original etchings, lithographs, and exhibition posters, all of which are available to buy, will be on display in the gallery located in the Clifton Arcade, BS8 4AA.
