Nature Journaling Autumn Term with Alex Boon

Come and try a day of nature journaling with artist and nature journaling educator, Alex Boon.

New to the School of Art & Wellbeing, come and try a day of nature journaling with artist and nature journaling educator, Alex Boon. Nature journaling is simply the act of keeping a journal that has a strong, but not necessarily exclusive, focus on nature. Your nature journal might take the form of a sketchbook, a species list, a written journal, a scrapbook, a photo diary, or something else. In this course, you will learn the fundamentals of starting and maintaining a nature journal, with a particular focus on journaling the coming of autumn. We will cover:
Prompts and exercises to start noticing and recording nature with just a pencil and sketchbook
How to sketch subjects quickly in the field and work these observations into beautiful paintings and written journal entries in the studio
Techniques for recording and identifying flora, fauna, and fungi
How to use Derwent Inktense pencils to capture natural subjects and landscapes
Painting and drawing nature from life and photographs. Through a combination of outdoor exploration of the nature of the SAW grounds, and fun painting exercises in the studio, you’ll learn to observe and record nature in a way that develops your creative skills, expands your knowledge, and calms and steadies the mind. An outdoor and indoor sketchbook and pencil will be provided for you to keep, and art materials will also be provided for you to try. Tuition is given in Derwent Inktense pencils and waterbrush though you are welcome to bring your own art materials if preferred. All abilities are welcomed, all that is required is a passion for nature.
