Discover new ways of seeing and expressing the landscape in this immersive two-day painting and drawing course, Abstracting the Landscape, at Messums Studios with drawing tutor Emma J Findley.
Designed for artists of all levels, this course invites you to move beyond literal representation and explore the essence, rhythm, and emotion of the natural world.
Over two days, you will work both outdoors and, in the studio, allowing your ideas to develop and shift in response to your surroundings in dynamic ways.
- On day one, using a limited palette of materials and colour, you will work “En Plein Air” drawing directly from the landscape and responding in real time to light, atmosphere, and movement.
- On day two, you’ll return to the studio to transform your drawings into paintings, using them as a starting point for abstraction.
Through a series of guided exercises and demonstrations, you will experiment with mark-making, composition, colour, and form—learning how to distil landscapes into bold, expressive interpretations. You will be encouraged to loosen your approach, embrace spontaneity, and develop a more intuitive visual language.
The course also includes group discussions and one-to-one feedback, offering valuable insight into your creative process and direction. Whether you’re looking to refresh your practice or push your work into new territory, Abstracting the Landscape provides a supportive and inspiring environment to explore, take risks, and create with confidence.
Materials provided: Paper, ink, pencils, charcoal, pastels, and paintbrushes.
Please bring: A packed lunch for both days and any additional materials you may wish to use.
