Devon’s history of involvement with Africa initially centred on the trade of human cargoes but the lack of research has lead to divergent assumptions.
In examining the last five hundred years, Dr Gray will draw upon some one hundred thousand documents and reveal the outline of the county’s most challenging historic topic. It will show the ways in which Devon’s history diverges from the national narrative. The historical evidence will help bridge the deepening gap in how this history is understood in Devon.
