TWENTY THREE NINETEEN takes its name from the number of pages (19) and number of names per page (23) in the Devon Slave-Owner Index, extracted from the Legacies of British Slave-Ownership Database, prepared by Peter Selley.

In this work by Ashanti Hare are the illustrated fragments of Devon landscapes included in the Devon Slave-Owner Index mixed with hand-crafted sigil spells, constellations and found object macrame along with a beaded mask cuffs and skirt influenced by Dancing Devils, Dogon Dancers, and various ceremonial costumes across global majority cultures.

The index contains the names and places of families in the South West who applied for compensation after the abolition of enslavement and where in the Caribbean the enslaved people were taken from. Many of these families’ descendants still live in the South West today.
