WHAT REMAINS Solo Exhibition by Crystal D. Evans

A multimedia solo exhibition exploring memory, identity, and human resilience through sculpture, photography, film, and poetry.

Roseberry Road Studios presents What Remains, a solo exhibition by multidisciplinary fine artist Crystal D. Evans. This immersive showcase brings together photography, sculpture, film, sound, and poetry, offering a profound meditation on memory, impermanence, and the enduring human spirit.

Evans’ practice draws inspiration from phenomenology, material narrative, and poetic inquiry, shaped by stoic philosophy. In What Remains, she examines the fragmented traces of human existence—what is lost, what lingers, and what we carry forward. The exhibition is structured into five non-linear thematic chapters: On Love & Growth, On Wisdom & Strength, On Work & Play, On Hope & Courage, and On Death & Legacy. These chapters guide visitors through a shifting emotional and sensory landscape, where each work invites reflection, contemplation, and connection.

The body of work has already gained international recognition. Extracts have been featured in Venice at Morphos: Temporary Identities, during the Venice Biennale 2025, at the Barcelona Contemporary Art Exhibition, and at the Rome International Contemporary Art Fair 2025. In the UK, it premiered at UCA Canterbury’s Herbert Read Gallery to critical acclaim. The current presentation at Roseberry Road Studios marks the most comprehensive solo showing of this collection to date, offering audiences an opportunity to engage fully with Evans’ vision.

Critics have praised What Remains as “a profound, timely, and viscerally sensorial experience that confronts the complexities of identity, grief, and embodiment in today’s fractured world—inviting reflection not only on what is seen, but on what remains unseen: beneath surfaces, between words, and within us.”

Evans’ heritage, spanning Malaysian Chinese and Ugandan-South African lineages, informs her acute sensitivity to cultural perception, memory, and emotional resonance. Her choice of materials—stoneware, pigment, paper, projected light, and voice—speaks to transience, trace, and impermanence, inviting viewers to confront uncertainty and embrace the ephemeral qualities of life.

What Remains is more than an exhibition; it is an intimate encounter with the human condition. Visitors are encouraged to explore the interplay between presence and absence, permanence and decay, seeing and sensing. Through its combination of visual, tactile, and auditory experiences, the show emphasizes the enduring traces of life, prompting reflection on personal histories, cultural memory, and the subtle forces that shape our existence.

This exhibition invites audiences to move beyond passive observation, fostering a space where contemplation, empathy, and curiosity intertwine. Evans’ work challenges us to consider not only what we leave behind, but also what continues to resonate within and beyond ourselves—ultimately reminding us of the resilience, complexity, and beauty of the human spirit.
