'THE THREE FISHES' - MAN IN THE WOODS
Paintings, drawings, sculpture and needlecraft by Man In The Woods
“One Friday 6 years ago I went for a walk. I left my front door and walked out of the city and into the countryside. After 11 miles I stopped at a village pub and had a pint of bitter, before running to catch the last bus home. The following week I took the bus back to that pub and carried on walking.
Most Fridays since then I’ve taken some combination of bus and train back to wherever my last Friday Walk finished, and carried on my long, continuous meander around the English countryside.
I’m not interested in achieving certain distances or visiting specific beauty spots. I just want to learn the land around me, and soak up the stories of the people who live within it.
My Friday Walk has come to inform all the work I make as an artist: from the magic of stone circles and ancient churches to the everyday of local pubs and angry dog poo signs.
I think of the things I make as artefacts rather than artworks. Little objects that help tell the story of the land I’m slowly getting to know each time I stick my boots on and go for a walk.”
