Past Unfolding

The paintings in this exhibition, ‘Past Un-folding ‘ as the title of this exhibition suggests glance back at not only my own work, but also the portrayal of women throughput Art History ; they - subject - informed by a pursuit n thought and their visual manifestations.

They are neither completely abstract nor figurative, but are suggestive of both. Whilst the strong intense layered colours, forms and depths of the surface with dark and light spaces, compel to go deeper and deeper into the painting, they also propose to step back and to entice you to stand still, reflect and contemplate.

The paintings could be suggestive of landscapes and they could be suggestive of portraits. At times fragmented and disjointed, the visuality of the work reflects and articulates the process of coming to terms with the past and the memories of a past which has been lost, yearned for and found again but with a different kind of body.

'The Past Un-folding’ paintings carry within a wishful thinking and a certain melancholy, whilst at the same time rendering a sense of abrupt confrontation with a bodily perception of self both inner and outer.

A consistent theme, which has been present and of great influence throughout the working practise, are both the acknowledgment to memories in time and of places, but also the perception felt and reflected upon in an abstracted visualisation, on the beauty of words particularly poetry where Virginia Woolf, Shakespeare and the words of T.S. Eliot will never leave me challenge and cannot be easily dismissed neither in their embodiment or meaning.
