National Poetry Day – Speakeasy Poetry Evening
An evening of poetry, featuring Sue Hill and Louise Hill-Davis plus an eclectic line up of Open Mic Poets.
Presented by Super Culture and The Write Box, Speakeasy is an evening of poetry, featuring Sue Hill and Louise Hill-Davis plus an eclectic line up of Open Mic Poets.
In this 26th incarnation of Speakeasy, we are over the moon to welcome Sue Hill, Co-facilitator of The Write Box, as featured poet! Join us as Sue launches her debut collection, Laying Down the Fragments.
Laying Down the Fragments is a mosaic of Sue’s lived experience, from youthful escapades and trauma to joy in nature, nostalgic memories of loved ones, and playful, haunting reminiscences of strange incidents in her parents’ hotel in Weston-super-Mare.
Sue captures these experiences with impressive clarity of language, a range of carefully structured forms and an eye for visual devices on the page. Characters spring to life vividly. Images of nature are lyrically painted. But there’s a seam of vulnerability, doubt and darkness holding these vigorous poems together, too: a tension between love and anxiety that leaves the reader uncertain which path the next page will lead them along.
The evening is supported by poetry from Louise Hill Davis.
Presented by Super Culture and led by Bob Walton and Sue Hill of The Write Box, the Speakeasy event features an open mic slot where members of the community are welcome to take to the Loves stage themselves and share a poem, giving everyone the chance to speak up and feel the Speakeasy love!
Whether you’d like to read your own poetry or just come along to hear some great writing, the Speakeasy promises a creative evening to fill the soul for everyone.
Loves are dishing up a delicious plant-based supper, which you can order on the night for £8
