Migrating Rocks: q and a with poet and curator
There will be a conversation between the poet/artist and curator and a chance to explore the exhibition.
The Migrating Rocks exhibition by Alyson Hallett explores what it means to bring science and Indigenous beliefs together and how to honour diverse forms of knowledge - in this case Māori protocols. Migrating Rocks is based on an interdisciplinary project that looks at returning rocks to Aotearoa New Zealand. This project, originally funded by Brigstow Institute, included a poet, curator, artist, geologists, anthropologist, art historian and researcher and invovled looking at how to decolonise rock collections and what future ethical practice might look like in relation to rocks and stones. The exhibition was created by artist and poet Alyson Hallett. The emphasis in the exhibition is on amplifying Indigenous protocols, with particular reference to Māori culture. The q and a will offer an opportunity to hear more about the project, ask questions, explore what it means to disrupt old colonial habits in relation to the collecting of rock and stone samples.
