John Brokenshire

Join us for the opening evening on Friday 7th March 17:30 onwards, all welcome!

John Brokenshire has lived in Sheffield since taking his art degree there from 1990 to 1995. His painting has long been seeking to express mystery and presence in nature.

His work develops thematically, from walking over local moorland to visiting rugged coastlines and trekking over the Camino in northern Spain. Recent sketching trips to the Penwith moors, especially near St Ives and St Just, have led to several series of works. There is more and more to experience in this region and the study of water and light, and their infinite play is an endless wonder. John’s best hopes are to be responsive and versatile and free with paint. John works in sketchbooks, water-based media and oil.

“I shall never forget my visit to St Ives in February 2020: St Ives was so quiet just pre lockdown, the empty streets full of mystique. This was such an impactful time when I encountered the special quality of the Penwith coastline. Just to gaze out seeing waves crest and a flash of sheer turquoise, seeing black rock gleaming in cove after cove, looking out over huge panoramas and the endless waves, the seagulls alighting on the water, nearby hawthorns standing low with white flowers in tiny buds. It’s as if the elements will find you and will touch your true self and will never stop revealing themselves.”

John’s work has been shown in galleries such as Penwith Gallery St Ives (associate member) the Curwen London W1 (until 2017), the Cupola, Sheffield. The canvas Untitled/Pentecost, (Dove) in the Methodist Collection of Modern Art has toured to e.g. Salisbury, Ely, Leicester Cathedrals.
