From Start to Finish
An exhibition with Cherry Lyons, Wendy Chudley and Susan Luker
Previous visitors to Cherry and Wendy’s exhibitions at Harbour House will be familiar with the convivial atmosphere they create in the gallery, usually at work at easel or table and always willing to discuss techniques and materials. Local artists may also have come across workshops and art society demonstrations with the artists. Ceramicist Susan Luker joins them for this exhibition that forms part of the South Hams Arts Forum Arts Trail across the region. Keen for visitors to see how their paintings are actually made, the artists will display sketchbooks and mood boards alongside step-by-step instructions for selected exhibits.
Wendy Chudley is inspired by the local environment and paints in the studio from her plein air sketches, notes and memories. She was the 2015 winner of the ‘New Fresh Artist’ competition held by Mayne Gallery of Kingsbridge, and exhibits regularly across the South West.
“Armed with my sketchbook and watercolours, I venture out in all weathers to carefully observe how the natural light reacts with nature to produce stunning scenery. Sometimes my inspiration can be fuelled by light falling on an old stone wall, an animal grazing or the vividness of wild flowers in the countryside; there will always be something to motivate me.”
Cherry Lyons is an experimental and adventurous artist who works with watercolours, acrylics, oils, pastels, printmaking and, most recently, the ancient art of encaustic wax in response to the ever changing light and climatic conditions when painting outdoors, rain or shine. Cherry has taken part in the televised Sky Landscape Artist of the Year competition in 2015, 2016 and 2018. She has also been a finalist for the Devon Life Landscape Painter of the Year award.
Susan Luker has been making contemporary ceramics since 1998. Her well established raku ceramic work is complemented by a new body of stoneware decorative ceramics using vitreous slips, clay slips and engobes, which “perform almost like paint on a canvas” and allow for a highly expressive response and process. Susan walks and makes drawings in preparation for new work, and abstracts her feelings around the landscape.
