Stone is by its nature ever present. Its character and personality spoke long before the presence of any human kind which arrived 2.5 million years ago. However, it’s importance, not only to our survival, is through humans wanting to express an image of “ourselves” in a permanent way to speak to their immediate communities and those yet to come.

The elemental form of the human body links our past, present and future. This figurative tradition has been crucial in my work and more recently I have been exploring the idea of the figure as a stand along piece that can speak on its own or perhaps be interacted with as in some ancient ritual.

As an artist I am a cultural magpie-looking and absorbing past and present ways of expressing this form which inevitably crystalises into the way I carve stone.
