Discomfort Zone, City of Portsmouth College Students
Discomfort Zone is a new exhibition featuring works by current City of Portsmouth College art students.
Invited to respond to John Walter’s current exhibition at Aspex Portsmouth: CAPSID, presented in collaboration with Arts Council Collection, the Aspex team worked closely with the students to engage with Walter’s work which resulted in a range of artworks including paintings, collage, sculpture, textile, photography, animation and 3D works.
Throughout this project each student created artworks that were completely out of their individual comfort zones, encouraging them to explore media and techniques they may not usually veer towards. Due to this initial discomfort and unfamiliarity with the media the students chose to work with, they decided to name this exhibition: Discomfort Zone.
Some students focused their research on disease, disability, wellbeing, and virology, directly responding to the science that influenced CAPSID. While others explored its social influences such as feminism, kinship, and mental health awareness. Most evident is the direct correlation between both exhibitions through bright colours, layered patterns and form which resonate with Walter’s artistic techniques. Discomfort Zone is an invitation to see beyond convention and an exercise in trying something new.
Discomfort Zone is free to visit and on display in the Learning Space from Wednesday 8th February until Sunday 19th March.
