Aspex Portsmouth

Aspex Portsmouth champions emerging artists and bold contemporary art, inspiring curiosity, creativity and new perspectives.

Aspex Portsmouth is a contemporary art gallery rooted in community, bringing joy through art and nurturing creativity, connection and belonging for over 40 years. As the city’s home for contemporary art, Aspex champions emerging artists and presents bold, experimental work that responds to the world around us, inspiring curiosity, conversation and new ways of seeing. Through a year-round programme of exhibitions, residencies, events, talks and creative workshops, we create opportunities for people to look, think, make and take part. Guided by our values of being radical, open-hearted and communal, our programme is welcoming and accessible to all - whether you’re a regular gallery-goer, visiting with family, or discovering contemporary art for the first time. Over the past four decades, Aspex has supported many artists at pivotal stages of their careers, including Cornelia Parker, Mona Hatoum, Lindsey Mendick and David Blandy. Alongside exhibitions, Aspex works closely with local communities, creating opportunities for people of all ages to engage with contemporary art through learning programmes, participatory projects and artist-led activities. Rooted in Portsmouth while connected to wider cultural conversations, Aspex is committed to creating an open and welcoming space for curiosity, creativity and exchange. Whether visiting for the first time or returning regularly, audiences are invited to explore fresh perspectives, encounter bold artistic practice, and take part in the creative life of the city. Aspex Portsmouth was founded in 1981 and is a registered charity and National Portfolio Organisation supported by Arts Council England.
