Clay Talks with Jen Hamilton of The Village Pottery

Celebrating 20 years of The Village Pottery — one of Bristol’s most prolific makers.

For twenty years, The Village Pottery has been at the heart of Bristol’s pottery scene. Founded by Jen Hamilton in 2005, after graduating with a BA(Hons) in Ceramics from Cardiff Metropolitan University, the business began as a shop and studio in Clifton Village, Bristol. Visitors could sip on a coffee while watching Jen at the wheel. Over the past two decades, Jen has built a thriving ceramics business—supplying restaurants (including Michelin-starred kitchens), running classes, and supporting early-career makers through employment and mentorship. Her adaptability as business owner and maker over the years is testament to her longevity.

Now based in a larger studio in Easton-in-Gordano, Jen continues to throw every piece on the wheel. Her work is refined during the throwing stage rather than turned, intentionally preserving the handmade essence. A carefully developed palette of glazes—often inspired by colours found in nature, clothing, and interiors—brings warmth and individuality to each item.

To mark 20 years of creative practice, Clay Shed invites you to join Jen Hamilton in conversation with Director Alice Shields. This talk is part of Clay Shed’s ongoing programme, showcasing ceramic practitioners who share insights into their professional journeys, challenges, and artistic philosophies.
