Block Wallpaper Printing with Hugh Dunford-Wood
Create your own plant-inspired repeat patterns and print a length of wallpaper by hand with award-winning artist Hugh Dunford Wood.
This workshop will take place over two days: Thursday 2nd June & Thursday 9th June 2022
We are delighted to host this fabulous creative workshop for the first time at MAKE Southwest. Over the 2 days there will be a natural progression from direct observational plant drawing, which will be used as a basis for an original design, onto creating a pattern and transferring in reverse onto a lino block, which will be cut and printed. Et voila, everyone there is a confirmed designer!
The delight is not about the most successful design, but about the variety of possibilities, which emerge as the work develops. This heritage craft practice is accessible and enjoyable: there is no mystery, no technical knowhow, it is achievable for anyone who can wield a pencil. You don¹t have to have particular drawing skills, or an artistic bent, just a willingness to explore.
About Hugh
Hugh Dunford Wood studied at the Ruskin School of Art at Oxford. He has painted and exhibited worldwide, and was Artist in Residence at The Royal Shakespeare Company, and several years later at the Globe Theatre when it first opened in 2000. Hugh has always maintained a design craft alongside his painting landscapes and portraits, and his lino prints. He has been teaching his unique wallpaper making and design course for many years. In March 2022, he received an award from the Prince of Wales, president of Heritage Crafts, for maintaining this endangered craft, at the same time as some of his designs were adopted by the V&A Museum as part of their permanent collection, hanging alongside Pugin and William Morris.

On the Day
All tools and materials will be provided. Please bring an apron and wear old clothes.
Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided. Lunch is not included in the ticket fee so please bring a packed lunch.
On arrival please make your way to the side gate of the Riverside Mill, through the courtyard and up the stone stairs on the side of the building. Please let us know if you require the lift.
Please be aware that you cannot use the Co-op car park for all day parking. The Methodist Church car park and Station Road car park usually have plenty of spaces.
