Art of the Maker: Paula Rego’s Printmaking
Dr Carinna Parraman will be in conversation with artist Paul Coldwell on the role of printmaking within the work of Paula Rego
Carinna Parraman will be in conversation with artist Paul Coldwell on the role of printmaking within the work of Paula Rego and in particular her approach to etching. Coldwell worked with Rego on all etchings between 1986 to 2005 which included The Nursery Rhymes, Peter Pan, The Children’s Crusade and Untitled (Abortion Series) and through this has a unique insight into how these prints came into being.
The talk will explore broad themes around Rego’s prints including, her use of colour and their relationship to graphic traditions. Rego’s etchings are essentially pictures fully realised through the medium of print, leading the critic Robert Hughes to write;
Rego’s etchings, and in particular the ‘nursery rhymes’, have every claim to be ranked among the outstanding feats of graphic imagination of our time. (Hughes 2007)
The Art of the Maker series is a collaboration between Arnolfini and The School of Art & Design and Centre for Fine Print Research at UWE Bristol.
Paul Coldwell is an artist and Professor of Fine Art Printmaking at University of the Arts London. As an artist, his practice includes prints, book works, sculptures and installations, focusing on themes of journey, absence and loss, He has exhibited widely both in UK and abroad and his work is included in numerous public collections, including Tate, V&A, British Museum, the Arts Council of England, Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, Geneva and MoMA (New York).
Books include Morandi’s Legacy: Influences on British Art Philip Wilson 2006) Printmaking; A Contemporary Perspective published by Black Dog Publishing in 2010 and Picturing the Invisible, co-edited with Professor Ruth Morgan published by UCL Press 2022. His paper The making of Paula Rego’s Nursery Rhymes was published in the Impact Printmaking Journal (spring 2020). He writes regularly on printmaking and is on the editorial board of the Journal Print Quarterly.
Dr Carinna Parraman is Professor of Design and Innovation: Colour and Print, and Director of the Centre for Print Research (CFPR), UWE Bristol. As Director of CFPR, she leads a cross-disciplinary research team comprising scientists and technologists, designers, artists, and researchers. She is chair of IMPACT international multidisciplinary printmaking conference. She is a specialist in colour printing and Red-Green-Blue (RGB) pigment printing; 2.5D or texture printing; photomechanical methods, photomechanical print history; colour theory, perception and print for fine art, design and industry.
