A Seat At The Table, Gee Mullins
Event map A Seat At The Table presents a collection of vibrant, sumptuous works by artist Gee Mullins.
Drawing from a rich tapestry of experience and emotion, food and travel fuel Gee Mullins’ creative process. Her practice celebrates food culture and the joys of coming together to share a meal. Often exploring literal details, we’re invited to reflect on our own experiences with food and the social and sensory encounters of shared eating. To share the beauty of life’s understated pleasures, those fleeting moments that often hold the greatest significance but to also contemplate associated issues of food consumption, food insecurity and class divisions.
Like within cooking, Gee thrives on experimentation and transformation of different mediums and works across paints, pastels, ceramics and printmaking; she relishes in the possibilities of an evolving and varied artistic expression. Her desire to craft still-life food and gastronomy printwork begins with immersion; soaking in the sights, sounds and energy of bustling local markets and tuning into the intimate connections forged over the kitchen table. With her imagination ignited, each piece is created through a journey of observation and introspection. Sketches on paper and digital collage build tangible concepts and playing with colour and texture enrich the final piece. Compositions are crafted that capture fragments of memory and nostalgia – reflecting a sense of place and identity. Illustrations and ceramic sculptures encourage our appetite through the sumptuous use of colour and techniques.
The humble kitchen table is a powerful symbol of connection and belonging. A place to celebrate family, community, rituals and traditions. A Seat At The Table encourages us to share food, share spaces and gather together to start conversations and create lasting memories. Delighting in ingredients and eating together has the capacity to fortify human relationships and acknowledge diversity. Food serves as a universal language which transcends borders and social divides, uniting and strengthening communities. To celebrate food is to make a toast to life.
