Bristol City Council and the City Centre Business Improvement District are seeking to commission an experienced artist, creative collaboration or artist collective who can demonstrate an innovative, creative approach to deliver site/context specific public art for King Street, Bristol.

The aims of the commission are to increase local distinctiveness, improve the public realm and attract greater footfall to King Street.

The commission needs to both respect the significance and heritage of King Street and look to its future. It is vital the end work draws on and builds local distinctiveness, reflecting the unique qualities and heritage of King Street and is designed with existing and future users of this place in mind.

The opportunity is for a permanent artwork and/or cohesive design for King Street that is linked with planned street scene and greening interventions. We welcome proposals for a standalone artwork and/or a work that integrates and helps to create a cohesive identity in the street.

We welcome expressions of interest from across the creative and design disciplines and interdisciplinary approaches between artists, designers and their chosen collaborators. We are open to expressions of interest from individual artists, designers, collaborations, or artist collectives from any location/region but if two or more EOIs / final designs score equally priority will be given to an artist/collective based in Bristol or surrounding area, or who have a lived experience or connection to Bristol.

DEADLINE for expressions of interest - 10am on Monday 21 August 2023.

From the EOIs a maximum of 5 shortlisted artists / collaborations / collectives will be paid an initial fee of £500 to develop a design proposal to present and be considered by the Commissioning Panel.

Artist Fee: up to a maximum of £10000
Production budget available: £43000
Work must be completed by March 2024.

The commission is funded by the City Centre BID and Bristol City Council's High Streets Recovery and Renewal Programme funded by Bristol City Council and the West of England Combined Authority's Love our High Streets project.
