Arnolfini Board of Trustees

Arnolfini is looking for new people to join our Board of Trustees.

Arnolfini is looking for new people to join our Board of Trustees. You will bring vibrant positive energy, progressive thinking, a commitment to diversity and inclusion and your professional skills to help advance the organisation’s business plan and our impact locally, nationally and internationally.

Are you passionate about contemporary art, cultural institutions and the role of culture and creativity in making cities and regions better places? Do you want to actively engage with Bristol, the South West and its cultural infrastructure?

Be part of an exciting and visionary team as a Trustee of Arnolfini, guiding one of Bristol’s leading contemporary arts centres into its next chapter. Lead strategic vision, foster community connections, and champion diverse artistic expression.

Our vision is for Arnolfini to be a place where arts and audiences come together, inviting conversation, creativity and collaboration, in a space that feels open to all.

Arnolfini is an acclaimed centre for international contemporary arts located in the heart of Bristol’s harbourside. For over 60 years we have delivered a high-quality cultural programme, working with the world’s leading visual artists, writers, performers, and musicians alongside our weekly programme of engagement and learning activity.

Last year we attracted 650,000 visitors to our historic building to experience the vibrant programme of contemporary arts and we engaged with thousands more through online and community outreach activity. Highlights of 2023/24 included:

176,449 visitors came to free exhibitions.
We employed 275 artists.
2,970 families came to free workshops.
1,578 school children visited free exhibitions.
We held 720 hours of engagement activities with community partners.

Our sights are firmly set on 2030 and we’re imagining and planning out the next chapter in Arnolfini’s development. As part of this, we’re seeking new Trustees to join a diverse and vibrant Board and to lead on its strategic vision. If you’re passionate about contemporary culture and inspired by the role it can play in elevating people’s lives, we’d love to hear from you.

Who we are looking for?

We want this process to be open to all and we’re looking for individuals who can work with the Board, Director and senior team to ensure Arnolfini continues to evolve and meets its goals, while remaining at the forefront of the contemporary arts for years to come.

We’d like to attract people who have experience of leadership or governance roles but we’re open minded as to where this might have been gained. It might have been within a cultural or community setting, or within the business or not for profit sector. We believe we will benefit from a Board that brings together people from different backgrounds, with different perspectives and life experiences. We want creative thinkers as well as strategists with well-developed professional skills. To achieve a balanced Board, we’ve identified some areas where expertise would be particularly welcome:

Cultural sector and creative industries.
Learning and Public Engagement.
Financial and business planning.
Human Resources.
Legal structures – charity and business.
Marketing and Communications.
Fundraising and philanthropy.
Environmental Sustainability.

Time commitment

Finally, you will be ready and willing to devote the necessary time and effort to fulfill the responsibilities of your role of one day per month.

This time commitment includes attending Board meetings and events, reviewing board papers, and participating actively in the Arnolfini activities.
