AA2A Residencies at the University of Portsmouth
Artist residencies offering access to a wide range of specialist creative facilities at the University of Portsmouth
The University of Portsmouth is offering 4–6 AA2A residencies for practising artists during the 2026/27 academic year.
Based within the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries, the residency provides artists with a vibrant, interdisciplinary creative environment where they can engage with students, academics and technicians across a wide range of creative disciplines. Residents receive at least 100 hours of access to the University's facilities during the residency period.
AA2A (Artists Access to Art Colleges) is a national residency programme established in 1996. It enables practising artists to access specialist facilities, equipment and expertise within further and higher education institutions, supporting artists to develop their practice, experiment with new approaches and access resources that may otherwise be unavailable to them.
At Portsmouth, residents can access an extensive range of facilities, including:
- Printmaking: screenprinting, etching, relief printing, letterpress and mono-printing
- Fashion and textiles: industrial sewing, embroidery, dyeing, printing and garment-making
- Photography and digital imaging: professional studios, darkroom, editing suites and large-format printing
- 3D design and fabrication: metal, plastics, laser cutting, CNC milling, 3D printing and casting
- Film and media: video editing, sound recording, green screen and performance spaces
- Creative technologies: motion capture, photogrammetry, 3D scanning, virtual production, VR and immersive media
- Digital production: Mac and PC suites, scanning, printing, vinyl cutting and Risograph printing
The University is also home to the Centre for Creative and Immersive Extended Reality (CCIXR), providing opportunities to explore immersive and emerging technologies.
The residency offers artists the opportunity to develop new work, experiment with specialist processes and become part of a collaborative creative community that values experimentation, innovation and creative exchange.
