The Yellowing - Works of Keith Frake
A bold new series, The Yellowing transforms alchemy’s “citrinitas” into layered, process-driven paintings in yellow and gold.
Artizan Collective presents The Yellowing, a new body of process-driven paintings by Keith Frake, developed over three years. Drawing on early Christian painting and apocalyptic imagery from the Books of Revelation and Enoch, Frake explores the alchemical stage of citrinitas—the “yellowing”—through a palette that pivots around yellow and gold, influenced by Byzantine icons and the colour symbolism of Georg Trakl.
Through burning, boiling and extended drying, surfaces shift and stain: whites mutate into ochres and browns; textures crack, scar and settle. The works embrace fragility, unpredictability and impermanence, reflecting contemporary anxieties while celebrating material transformation.
