Hot Potato’s exhibition, Sign Up, is a photographic examination of the petition as a political tool. It uses collaboration to respond to the increased threat of civic censorship and silencing of artists who use their platform to speak out.
Founded by Naoise O’Keeffe, Hot Potato began in Ireland in 2018. It aims to create an alternative to typical newsprint with the creative interpretation of politics and global affairs. By inviting the photography community to 'sign up', Hot Potato addresses increased censorship and media bias against Palestine, as well as its impact on the arts.
Central to the exhibition is the visualisation of the petition. To expand the language around visual protest, Hot Potato invites artists to create a response without using imagery that can lead to censorship. The submissions all feature the artist's signature on a poster designed by Maya Moumne at Studio Safar in Beirut. Through reimagining the petition, Hot Potato seeks to broaden the conversation by disrupting censorship.
The exhibition questions whether art can play a role in protest. While interested in who signs up and why, Hot Potato are also concerned with who does not, and the role institutions play in enabling censorship. What is it to have a voice in the current media landscape and who is permitted to make work? What is the role of the photographer if they are prevented from communicating in their medium?
