Ritu Sood: Post Trauma
The essence of Ritu Sood’s paintings is that human experience is shareable.
In ‘Post Trauma’, solitary life size figures rest in expanses of seductive colour. They act as ‘portals’ to collective emotional experience. This is a sister project to ‘The Wisdom of Trauma’ shown at The Stroud Film Festival.
This exhibition shows paintings created almost 30 years ago from the series ‘Post Trauma’. A health collapse at the age of 20 initiated a series of paintings depicting solitary, life size figures resting in rich colour fields, each evoking core emotional states that we share such as pain, stillness, isolation and love. Ritu understood that emotional experience is for sharing and that this sharing of life’s adversity and its beauty is necessary. Ritu’s paintings bring together the languages of the body, nature’s colours and forms, with emotion at their core, aiming to create ‘portals’ that lead to the sharing of experience. ‘Post Trauma’ is Sood’s sister project to screening ‘The Wisdom of Trauma’ at The Stroud Film Festival earlier this year.
Opening night: Friday 13th September 6-8pm
6.30pm Ritu will be in conversation with Gloucester based, multi disciplinary, international creative Rider Shafique, talking about the role of the artist in collective emotional experiences and her 30 year artistic journey.
Ritu Sood was born in London and is now resident in Stroud. She gained a Masters degree in Painting from the Slade School of Art, London, studying Fine Art at Chelsea School of Art, Academy of Fine Arts Seville and Norwich School of Art before that. Sood’s paintings are known to be eloquent commentaries on human experience and are held in national and international public and private collections.
