Open Studio
Sophie Goodchild will be hosting an open studio at Porthmeor Studios in St Ives
Sophie Goodchild has been in Porthmeor Studio 5 for a month and will be hosting an open studio on Wednesday 29 April to close her time.
"In the making of new work, I’m mirroring the panelled structure that lines Studio 5 here at Porthmeor, and working with the ‘stretched’ and 'panoramic’ structure both internally and externally of these walls. Thinking about the rock formations, layered strata and ancient sites I've been walking over and within as a deciding factor to physically make within. Now half way through my second pregnancy, I've been thinking about the idea of fossilising the rapidly changing temporal elements through fibre and both body and land, shrinking, swelling and contracting simultaneously. Loi Holliwell talks about the idea that the pregnant body and labour is a 'site' (or landscape) of elasticity, resistance and resilience, and thinking about the physical perspective of the body from above and below all at once. The act of ‘baring down’ is something I find myself thinking about as I am physically expanding, losing balance and seeing the female pregnant body mirrored back in the abrasive landscape that holds up West Penwith so defiantly."
