This weekend workshop will be an introduction to throwing on the wheel for complete beginners or those new to throwing on the wheel. On the first day, you will be guided step-by-step through the throwing process, from preparing clay, to centering and throwing cylinders and bowls.

On day 2 you will be able to turn your pots and learn to add a foot-ring to the base. At this stage you can also have a go at slip decoration on the wheel, to add colour to your hand-thrown pots. Whether you are a complete beginner or need refresher, by the end of the weekend you will be confident in throwing your own pots.

This workshop is limited to a maximum of 6 students and you will each have your own wheel to use for the duration of the workshop. After the workshop, we will glaze and fire your pieces ready for collection a few weeks later.

Meet the tutor
Miranda makes high-fired stoneware forms using a combination of wheel-thrown and hand-built techniques. Her work has a focus on form and explores the idea of balance and texture, often highlighted by contrasting glazes.

Miranda has an interest in clay as a natural material and different clay bodies. She is interested in our relationship with clay and its journey. Miranda hopes to emulate the organic process in her art making, showing where the clay has come from and the process of turning clay into ceramic.

Miranda believes in the therapeutic benefits of working with clay and teaches throwing and hand-building classes at New Brewery Arts.
