This beginners workshop with Amy Jobes will help unleash your creativity in oil painting.

If you have ever wanted to try your hand at oil painting and simply don't know where to start, this beginners workshop with Amy Jobes will help unleash your creativity. Amy will guide you step by step to create an expressive landscape oil painting. This class will cover basic traditional techniques and methods, whilst helping you to let go of feeling anxious or precious about your work. This includes: Composition ideas, how to start using a sketch and ground, how to create depth with tone, working from dark to light, muted vs saturated colours, impasto mark marking.

Please bring with you:

Oil paint colours

  • Titanium White (I use Alkyd Titanium White to speed up drying time)
  • Lemon Yellow or Cadmium Yellow Hue Light (I use Cadmium Hues as they are less toxic)
  • Cadmium Yellow Hue or Permanent Yellow Deep
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Cerulean Blue
  • Phthalo Blue
  • Cadmium Red Hue or Scarlet (I use Cadmium Hues as they are less toxic)
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Buff titanium

If you are just starting out I recommend purchasing this set of oil paints from Cass Art as it has warm and cool versions of each primary colour.

Other colours I find useful:

  • Yellow Ochre
  • Raw Umber
  • Naples Orange
  • Pale Rose Blush
  • Permanent Magenta
  • Colbalt Blue
  • Turquoise
  • Sap Green
  • Paynes Grey

Mediums and solvents

  • Low odour white spirit (or Zest It or Gamsol. Please not Turpentine as the fumes are really bad!)

  • 2 large house brushes (from a DIY store is fine)
  • 1 or two fan brushes
