Here's to Thee Showcase

To showcase Simon Pope’s Here’s to Thee commission for Exeter Arts & Culture and RAMM, join us for an hour of music and explanation.

Simon and the artists who have taken part will introduce the project supported by music and related folk songs performed by Jim Causley and Bill Murray.

Simon Pope’s fascinating project explores how people negotiate their relationships with microbial life through cidermaking and the folkways associated with it, such as wassailing. Wassailing is a folk tradition that celebrates the importance of apple trees to local communities. Simon's project also acknowledges the microbes that are vital to making cider, with a suite of new songs and performances that explore the complex relationships between people and the yeasts, bacteria, and moulds that come together during fermentation.

On display in the Core Wall at the centre of the museum are a selection of communal drinking vessels from RAMM’s collections, alongside contemporary works made as part of the wassailing events held at Grays Devon Cider at Halstow, in 2020 and 2022.

These include a wassail bowl by ceramic artist Abigail North, photography by Robert Darch, and a new film by Bevis Bowden, documenting the second Halstow wassail held on 15th January 2022.
