HELSTON AND 'THE BATTLE OF THE STYLES'
Talk and Walk with architectural historian and author Dr Julian Holder
Architectural historian and author Dr Julian Holder delves into the debate about architectural styles that raged in London in the middle of the nineteenth century and brings it home to Helston. The battle between Classical and Gothic architectural styles that centred on the design of the new Foreign Office building in Whitehall involved architects and politicians – including the Prime Minister – and was also played out in Helston’s major nineteenth-century buildings, the Grylls Monument and the Guildhall.
Julian Holder will explore these histories in his illustrated talk and will lead a walk on the morning of Saturday 11 October. Booking is required for both events.
Organised in association with Helston Place Shaping Board.
