Bitesize: Unpacking 'Napoleon on the Bellerophon'

Lis­ten as Art Cura­tor, Ter­ah Walkup explores Jules Girarde­t’s much-loved paint­ing of Napoleon in Ply­mouth Sound in August 1815.

Although Girardet's imaginative reconstruction was painted in 1890, seventy-five years after the events took place, it reflects contemporary accounts in several respects, especially the number of people afloat in the bay as the fallen French Emperor parades on deck.
