Artist Talk with David Ward

Join us on 7th August for a talk from artist David Ward, who will be at Anchor Studio for the month of August

Initially a painter, David Ward is known for his work in light and time based media including photography, film, sound and performance.

The body and the dynamics of light are central to his work, together with elemental themes of the natural world, relating to a wide range of associations, both contemporary and historical. Language, written and spoken, appears within his work in the form of live and recorded readings and as poetic texts. New work in film and performance, with their elements of flux and transience, continue to develop his commitment to the active engagement of the viewer.

He has made numerous collaborations with other artists, choreographers, composers, architects and writers, and both permanent and temporary commissions in the public realm. His work, in solo and group exhibitions and his site specific installations and performances have been seen throughout Britain and in Europe and the USA.

He is represented in public collections including Tate, The National Portrait Gallery, Arts Council England, the Fogg Museum at Harvard Art Museums and the Pier Arts Centre, Orkney.

David writes:
"For many years I have thought of certain studios and some art galleries as being like ships. This metaphor, of the studio as a vessel, struck me clearly when I visited Anchor Studio. It appeared to me like a boat, anchored on the hill above Newlyn’s working harbour."

David’s long connection with West Penwith began in 1971 when, as a painting student at Winchester School of Art, he attended a field trip hosted by Patrick and Delia Heron. During that week he also met Bryan Wynter, Roger Hilton, Bernard Leach, Tony O’Malley, Denis Mitchell, John Wells and Sheila Lanyon.

Describing those early experiences and his first introductions to the land and seascapes of Cornwall David talks about the significance of continuity, change and renewal in West Penwith.
