Talks & Seminars

Art Talkin'

Art Talkin’ is a series of open discussions looking at different approaches to making and viewing art, led by local artist Howard Porter

This series of open ended discussions will focus on how we approach art, construct meaning and evaluate our responses. We will reference art history and concepts drawn from philosophy and other disciplines in order to examine our relationship with art.

Each session will be guided by an opening proposition or art historical reference but participants will be encouraged to formulate their own ideas and contribute to the group.

Artist attendees will be encouraged to discuss their own work or that of others if they wish but no previous art theory experience is required, just an openness to ideas.

Themes will include:

Image and meaning

  • Art and context
  • Authorship
  • Art and language
  • Memory and experience
  • Materiality and production
  • Form and expression

Participants will also be encouraged to suggest their own themes.

The sessions are open to artists and anybody with an interest in or curiosity about art.
