Andrew Brewerton Professorial Lecture 'On Making: Learning as Artefact'

Arts University Plymouth’s inaugural professorial lecture, held in recognition of Andrew Brewerton’s appointment as Professor Emeritus.

Arts University Plymouth is launching its inaugural lecture series with a free public lecture from Professor Andrew Brewerton, ‘On Making: Learning as Artefact’, to be held in The Box on Thursday 17 November at 5:30pm. The lecture, which is held in recognition of Andrew’s appointment as Professor Emeritus at Arts University Plymouth in 2021, will reflect on the concept of making as being intrinsic to human learning, within and beyond an educational context.

This marks the inaugural lecture from Arts University Plymouth since it was granted full university status in May 2022, becoming the city of Plymouth’s only dedicated arts university. The lecture will feature an opportunity for questions and discussion afterwards, hosted by Professor Stephen Felmingham, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of Arts University Plymouth.

The public series of lectures and events is designed to celebrate the significant milestone of a member of the Arts University Plymouth community achieving the title of Professor. These free public events give new professors an opportunity to share research and other academic achievements in their creative field, broadening the impact and value of their work, inviting collaboration and giving back to staff, students and friends of Arts University Plymouth.

Professor Andrew Brewerton served as Principal & Chief Executive from 2010 until his retirement in 2021 following a 27-year career in Higher Education. He was made Honorary Professor of Fine Art at Shanghai University in 2000 and appointed as a Distinguished Professor of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts in 2017. Andrew was founding Chair of Governors and Director of Trustees of the Plymouth School of Creative Arts (2012-19) and has served on numerous national bodies including the National Council of Arts Council England, the Creative Industry Federation’s UK Advisory Council, and was Vice-Chair of the Prime Minister’s Initiative (PMI2) for International Education. An English graduate of the University of Cambridge, he is a poet, and writer on contemporary visual art and education.

The event will take place on Thursday 17th November at The Box from 5.30pm with the lecture commencing at 6pm. There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion afterwards hosted by our Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Stephen Felmingham, followed by a short drinks reception.

Limited tickets are available please book early to avoid disappointment.

We extend thanks to our friends and neighbours at The Box Plymouth for hosting the first in this series of events.
