Call for artists

Somerset Art Works Creative Pathways Bursaries 2023

Creative Pathways Bursary is a professional development programme that aims to provide tailor-made support for Somerset Art Works Members.

This year, we are offering bursaries to 4 Somerset-based artists aged between 18-30 OR in the early stages of their career to demonstrate their developing practices and engage their audiences during our Somerset Open Studios Event (16 September - 1 October 2023).

We welcome applications from artists working in different contemporary visual art disciplines, including illustration, design, craft and other forms of visual arts, and be part of the Open Studios Event in his/her chosen location/venue. We have a number of organisations that we are working with, including ACEarts in Somerton and Yeovil Art Space. If you do not have studio/work space, there is a possibility to match you with a venue nearby, please indicate in your application.

Within the context of our funding priorities, we are looking for applications from artists directly responding to our focus on Environmental Responsibility. We would like to work with you to develop best practice in this area, whether it is about the use of materials, the approach, the message of your work, or issues that you wish to contribute part of the conversation locally, nationally or globally. Somerset Art Works has become one of a growing number of arts organisations and individuals who have declared a climate and ecological emergency via the Culture Declares movement.

As part of our organisation's value in championing diversity and equality in our communities, we strongly encourage application from those who are currently underrepresented and have not been reached in the previous programme, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds. The programme aims to provide a ‘head-start’ for artists in the early stage of their career.

The selected artists will receive the following:
- Free participation in Somerset Open Studios 2023 in September/October (Equivalent to
around £200)
- £500 to cover training and production cost for event and exhibition for Art Weeks Festival
- 5 hrs mentoring support (Equivalent to £250)
- 10 hrs peer review/learning programme (Equivalent to £250)
- 5 hrs advice and support with artistic development and marketing from the SAW Team
(Equivalent to £200)
