RESIDENT
4 – 6 week paid residency for Cornwall based creatives Studio and project spaces for experimentation, install, performance and exhibition possibilities.
WHEN: 4-6 weeks: May 16th to June 26th.
DEADLINE: Saturday May 7th at Midnight
Successful applicants will be informed by Friday May 13th.
WHO: Visual and performance artists living and working in Cornwall.

WHAT:The residency includes
• A month to six week long studio residency, with overhead costs for the space covered. The space is located on the site of a former dairy in the heart of Lostwithiel. It is 12m x 6m size, with a high ceiling, suitable for work at most scales. There is also the sole use of a 4m x 3m test space which can be used for experimental works, installations and performances. There is an extensive compliment of tools, easels and basic materials available. There is also AV equipment including camera, projector and screens.
• The option of local accommodation may be available, if required; a limited number of nights free of charge.
• An artist fee of £750.
• A production budget of £150 towards materials and related costs agreed with UNIT3.
• A fee of up to £100 to run an engagement workshop. The option to hold informal meet-ups, groups or crits is possible if you are unable to lead workshops.
• Support for a public-facing event: exhibition of work in progress, a performance, film screening, discussion group etc.
• Curatorial and critical support from the UNIT3 team, invited curators and local arts professionals.
We would like to see:
• Applications from visual and performance artists. We are looking for individuals with significant potential and drive, who are rigorous in their approach to creation and production, but who may not have previously had much support or notable exhibition opportunities from arts organisations. Educational qualifications will neither add or detract from your suitability to this residency; however, if you are currently studying we would expect you to disclose this and explain how this opportunity sits outside of the support you are given by your educational institution.
• Applications which clearly define why this opportunity will be of use to your practice at this moment in your career.
• Applications which engage with the context of Lostwithiel. While we don’t expect every application to be site-specific, there does need to be an understanding of the town, site and its potentials, audience, and challenges.
• To agree with UNIT3 a commitment to be physically present, for a minimum agreed number of days, in the test and studio spaces. We are aware of how precarious income streams are for creatives at present and will not expect an unreasonable commitment of your time which would adversely impact on other projects and work.
• That applicants have thought about the engagement workshop opportunities, and how this may relate or feed into their wider residency. This would be with the local community and/or with students from nearby Fowey River Academy or Bodmin College. Whilst experience of running workshops is not essential, we would expect you to demonstrate your confidence in delivering this type of activity and ability to work with the public. We can give support on this element of the residency programme. Workshops which may need to be delivered outside or digitally can be accommodated.
• You would need to be registered as self-employed and hold an enhanced DBS check. If you don’t know what these things are, please still apply, as we can signpost you to support to put these things in place.
• We welcome applications from neurodiverse and disabled artists, please let us know if you have any additional access needs either for application or residency. The studio space is located on the first floor of the building, with no lift. If this would be a barrier for you, please get in contact and we can discuss how we could support you.
