Aim

The Burton has developed a yearly commission to support and promote artists from across the South West region. We are passionate about supporting local talent and this commission provides artists with a paid project with the final work accessioned into our renowned Permanent Collection.

We are seeking to commission a local South West artist, or collective, to develop a piece of work in response to climate and environmental change, all media considered. We would like the successful applicant to reflect on the ideas of the changing face of our environment either through natural or man-made changes in our environment.

This creative exploration will result in work/s that will displayed in the Burton for 6 months before joining the Burton’s Permanent Collection to be toured or loaned out.

Activity

Develop a project responding to the theme. All media considered.

Developing Own Work

There will be opportunities to research, develop and present work as well as the piece being part of the Collection.

In addition, the Artist or collective commissioned may be expected to:

• Give a talk about their work
• Participate in the evaluation process of the commission
• Provide documentation on the commission for use in reports, presentations and social media
• Positively represent the Burton at Bideford

Experience

• Artists must be based in the South West Region

Copyright and Ownership

The copyright and all intellectual property rights in the created works and/or documents will remain vested in the artist or the person responsible for their production. The Burton will hold for the lifetime of the image and add to their Collection.

Please apply in writing to info@theburton.org using no more than two pages of A4 including information about your experience to date and your initial ideas for the commission.
