KRATE is a transportable ‘pop-up’ artist studio. Whilst in transit and before installation, KRATE resembles a standard packaging crate, upon installation however KRATE transforms into a desk, chair and other flat-packed studio components, complete with a small solar-panel, capable of charging a phone or lap-top.

Transported, via electric van, between residency sites for a series of six two-week residencies, KRATE shall be installed in un-occupied public-facing retail spaces, within six cities across England to be occupied by the six residency artists. The location of each residency site shall be researched and secured by the project curator with input and ‘eyes-on-the-ground’ collaboration with each invited residency artist. Artists need not be based within a specific city, but close enough to be able to make the daily commute to and from or able to find their own accommodation there.

During the residencies artists shall be invited to creatively explore the most pressing issue of our era, The-Climate-Change-Emergency. To begin to make the many changes required for the complex global situation of Climate Change clearly requires innovative and creative exploration, as well as pragmatic and scientific approaches. Installing and activating the KRATE structure within the residency site, artists shall be invited to create new artwork that explores, articulates and offers creative solutions in relation to the global imperative of transitioning to a Carbon-Net-Zero-Future.

Artists shall be invited to communicate and engage with their public from the residency site as their art practice best allows. During the second week of the residency artist’s shall be invited to devise and offer a free public workshop, relating to their practice and work explored during the residency. There shall be a Press-Release in each city and the Media invited to visit the project site. KRATE shall conclude with a group gallery exhibition showcasing the work created during the project.
