Hidden Histories Tour Guide Course

Hidden Histories is returning this Spring and God’s House Tower is looking for engaging individuals to become our next team of volunteer tour guides

Hidden Histories launched last Autumn to mark Black History Month and as Southampton’s first Black History walking tour, participants explored the diverse history of the city spanning over 400 years and discovered many unknown stories from the Old Town and it’s diverse community. As the tour restarts this March, we’re now offering you the chance to get involved and join our tour guide training course.

As a tour guide, you’ll undergo an intensive training programme which will see you learn, research and share the Black History of Southampton. You’ll explore fascinating hidden and lesser known stories of the Old Town and will play an important role in the retelling of Southampton’s history. At the end of the course, you will have the option of becoming an accredited White Badge tour guide, fully trained and equipped to deliver a walking tour of Southampton’s Black History.

The course will be delivered as weekly sessions led by Southampton historian Dr Cheryl Butler and will be supported by the wider GHT team and fellow guides.

We will be hosting an open evening this March where you will have the opportunity to find out more about Hidden Histories and the training course and hear from our current guides on their experiences as tour guides.

*Participants will be charged a fee of £50 for the course to contribute to administration and delivery costs. We understand that this may be a barrier for some people so we are offering a small number of bursary places to allow as many people as possible to enjoy this training.
