About the residency programme

Back Lane West is a not for profit artist-led space in Redruth, Cornwall, which provides residency space to test and develop new work, for contemporary artists at any stage of their career. It was established by Patrick and Jane Lowry in 2009, with Rosie Allen and Cat Bagg joining the team in 2017. Back Lane West’s aims are to support critically engaged visual art practice and artists’ professional development.

During early 2022 we’re offering a longer residency period, intended to allow a group of artists interested in collaboration and self organisation time to develop work together, or an individual, looking to develop an artist-led project, a space for research and experimentation. We are happy to accept applications from practitioners whose primary practice is curatorial/editorial/organisational provided there is an active engagement with artists.

Residents will have use of our self-contained project space and resource area with wifi, books and magazines, stools, trestle tables, A3 printing facilities, a basic tool kit and digital projector. Also available for loan on request/or in the space are: 2 studio monitors, 2 small light boxes, various slide projectors, OHP, speakers, headphones and a super 8 camera. If you are interested in using other media kit, tools or equipment etc please ask and we will do our best to help you access them.

If artists decide to open the space to the public during their residency period, support for marketing and publicity can be provided by the Back Lane West team. The team can also be available during the residency period for advice or support depending on the needs of the artist. Artists often choose to share their practice by giving a public talk, or organising a performance, screening or short exhibition. Residency applications which include some public output will be looked upon favourably, however there is no requirement for this and any events will need to comply with the current government guidance on social distancing.

Back Lane West very occasionally programmes events such as talks, reading groups and peer led crit sessions to take place in the space. Please note that a series of talks is planned in collaboration with CAMP during the residency, so there will be 1 or 2 days when the space will need to be clear for public use. The dates for this are not yet finalised and there is some room for negotiation. These infrequent events are a good way to connect with the local arts community.

If you are interested in a slightly shorter period of time within these four months, please get in contact to discuss options.
