Plymouth Culture is seeking an artist or collective for a major commissioning opportunity, centred around a process of co-creation working with communities in Plymouth, to reimagine our connection to the sea.

This is the second commission in our ambitious four-year programme "Sea for Yourself," developed and delivered in partnership with Plymouth Sound National Marine Park (PSNMP) and funded through National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England Place Partnership.

Sea for Yourself aims to encourage connection with the ocean through art, digital innovation and storytelling, fostering future relationships of care and stewardship for the marine environment.

We are inviting submissions from UK-based artists with a minimum of two-years professional practice, a strong background in developing socially engaged work in community settings, and experience of working imaginatively with digital technology. Working closely with PSNMP engagement teams and drawing on partnerships with cultural institutions and community organisations, the commissioned artist will develop a collaborative, co-created digital project that explores Plymouth residents' relationship with the ocean. A theme of the commission is 'archive and heritage', and the project is expected to draw on the rich collections and archives at The Box, creating a positive legacy for communities around Plymouth Sound National Marine Park as well as resonating with broader audiences.

We are particularly interested in hearing from artists currently under-represented in the creative technology, arts and culture sectors in the UK, particularly those who may face or have faced barriers, marginalisation, and inequal access to opportunities such as this commission due to physical health/disability, sensory impairment, learning disabilities, mental health issues, neurodivergence, sexuality, gender, or ethnicity.
