Call out for Artist-Educator
Seeking an Artist-Educator to run a series of 10 art workshops exploring the history of young people’s phone use
John Hansard Gallery is seeking an experienced Artist-Educator to work on a new project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), part of UK Research and Innovation, and led by Dr Eve Colpus, Associate Professor of History at University of Southampton.
The research project is entitled ‘Children and Young People’s Telephone Use and Telephone Cultures in Britain c.1984-1999’ (University of Southampton Ethics and Research Governance Online number: 56966). It is examining the relationship between young people’s telephone use and youth agency in Britain in the recent past, including in relation to young people’s phone cultures today. The project is drawing on approaches of child-centred histories and studies of technology and technology use and seeks to reveal the untold history of children’s telephone usage both as an activity, and its contribution to identity-making.
We are running a series of ten art workshops with young people aged 14–19 that will look at young people’s experiences with phones today in comparison with those of young people in the 1980s and 1990s. We want to bring the history of young people’s phone use to the public through using visual art, writing, and stories to make a creative response. We would like young people to help to create this narrative.
To inspire interest and involvement, we are seeking a highly motivated Artist-Educator who has experience of working with young people and who is keen to respond to different source materials, such as using visual data in qualitative research. The aim will be to capture insights into the individual impacts of young people’s experiences as phone users, using object and visual elucidation around data and sources collected in the wider project to stimulate reflection amongst the group. Eight of these sessions will take place over four months between October 2021 and January 2022, on weekday evenings from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.
Workshop fee: £1810 (inclusive of planning, set up, delivery and travel). There is a separate budget for materials and an additional fee for exhibition development costs.
