Commission
Artist concept design commission for Moon Street, Bristol
An artist concept design commission to create a sense of arrival and identity within the main courtyard of the new Moon Street development in Bristol.
An artist will work with the client and design team to heighten the experience of entering the building through the courtyard and to also contribute to way marking the building on the street.
Within the operational requirements of access and privacy for window treatments the client is keen to develop a work that is permanent, sits lightly and embraces the space. Wall elevations (paint based or applied work), groundscape, seating and lighting as well as internal elements are seen as potential working areas. The railings could also be considered if cost allowance permits.
Given the timing of the work we will be expecting the final designs to be easily integrated/fixed into the courtyard space and not require significant structural strengthening/modification.
The commission is likely to led by one artist/artist group to conceive a creative approach for the whole space. Given the unique identity of Stokes Croft it will be important that the creative response grows out of research and time spent responding to the area.
We wish to commission publicly visible, new, responsive work that will bring colour and energy to the courtyard, reflecting the vibrant feel once the development is populated by students.
The key user experiences that we are focusing on are:
• Contributing to a sense of welcoming, arrival and identity for the development.
• Creating a sense of new vitality
• A sense of high quality use of material, colour and form
It is expected that the artist will proceed on to a detailed design/fabrication appointment subject to client approval of concept designs.
