Matthew Lanyon Festival
A two-day two day Festival at Falmouth University marking ten years since the death of the Cornish artist Matthew Lanyon.
The Archaeology of Tomorrow, Ten Years into the Afterlife will create ways into exploring Cornish and global themes relating to legacy. Admission is free and open to all. One of Cornwall’s most important, complex and purposeful artists, Matthew was constantly breaking new ground across an expanding range of media, materials and obsessions, whilst carrying a challenging and proud artistic and Cornish inheritance. His father was the internationally renowned Cornish modernist painter Peter Lanyon. Matthew documented his life and work to a degree seldom seen, and held hope for the curiosity and capacity of future generations. His instinct for ambiguity and concealment resonates, hand in hand with intriguing revelation throughout his work. We are grateful to Falmouth University for partnering with us to present this opportunity to celebrate Matthew’s life and legacy. There will be workshops, talks, film screenings, conversation, surprise performances and a spectacular series of exhibitions exploring Matthew’s paintings, poetry, constructions and confessions, including unseen material from his exceptional personal and professional archive.
