The Roche Court Educational Trust

The Roche Court Educational Trust is an arts education charity that works with young people, specialist groups and teachers to develop knowledge, skills and confidence by looking, thinking and speaking about art. We work at a regional, national and international level. In the last year the Trust’s activities have involved working with over 10,000 people from schools, colleges and universities, museums and specialist groups.

Our aims:

  • To introduce and increase knowledge of modern and contemporary art to audiences, regardless of background or experience.
  • To use art as a means to raise the aspirations and confidence of all our audiences to enable them to be culturally confident citizens of the future.

The Trust was founded in 2005 by Madeleine Bessborough, Director of the New Art Centre, Roche Court Sculpture Park in Wiltshire, where the charity is based. The New Art Centre has a programme of changing indoor and outdoor exhibitions of modern and contemporary art by internationally renowned artists, which provides the stimulus for all of our educational activities.

ARTiculation is the Trust’s international public speaking initiative for young people designed to promote the appreciation and discussion of art. It engages 14 to 19-year olds with art to develop their confidence and provides a platform for them to express their opinions, thoughts and conclusions.

As part of the ARTiculation Prize, young people deliver a ten-minute presentation to an audience about a work of art, architecture or an artefact of their choice. Museums and galleries across the UK including the the National Gallery, the BALTIC, the Whitworth and the Ashmolean host ARTiculation workshops and events. Eminent gallery directors, artists, journalists and academics adjudicate The Prize.

The Discover ARTiculation Prize introduces younger students aged 14 to 16 to the key skills that ARTiculation promotes. The Final of Discover ARTiculation is held at the University of Leeds.

An extensive programme of outreach workshops targeting state maintained schools which fit the widening participation category runs alongside The ARTiculation Prize.

ARTiculation is also established in Scotland and Ireland.
