Wet plate collodion is one of the earliest photographic processes, dating back to the 1850’s. It represented a radical move forward both technologically and in the ability to capture an image and hold it for perpertuity on glass or tin. Experience the magic and mystery of this process by watching an image appear before your eyes like a 19th Century polaroid.

In this workshop you will immerse yourself in the technology of the 1850’s and using large format cameras you will be taught how to prepare plates, work with natural light and develop tintype and glass plate ‘Ambrotype’s’ in a darkroom.

We will begin with a brief step back in history to explain how this process came about and then dive straight in with a hands on demonstration of how to pour your first plate.

Using available light and a large format camera you will then team up with your fellow students to take portraits or still life images, which will be developed in the darkroom before your very eyes. You will learn skills of assessing light to expose your images correctly as well as all the necessary steps involved in this process.

This is an intense day of image making, where you will be introduced you to many new skills and a new discipline for image making. Rounding up the day we will look at our images and review the days plates, discussing the joy and challenges of wet plate image making.

The workshop is suitable for both beginners, non photographers and established photographers and if you thought you had your conventional photographic technique mastered, this may well add a few extra skills to your bow.

You will have your own piece of art to take home and treasure.

Places are strictly limited to 6 and priced at £120 per person for the day (£130 including lunch). This includes all tuition, materials, chemistry, equipment and plates.
