Arnolfini are proud to present A Revolution of Discomfort – an immersive new installation and video work created by Now or Never. Now or Never is Arnolfini’s creative studio led by a collaborative group of 13-18 year olds – creating new artistic and design work that challenges the way things are and projects their ideas into the world.

A Revolution of Discomfort imagines the future world of New Bristol, a virtual 3D landscape where the false promises sold through the ad campaigns for ‘No Sole shoes’ are even more blatant and ridiculous than in reality. There is absolutely no escape from the latest cult must-have, the ‘Game Joy’ VR headset, which transports the viewer to their ‘happy place’. However, even in this colourful, computer-generated world, you’re never more than 5 seconds away from an advert, and there’s something very dark hidden not far beneath the surface.

The video and installation work are the result of six months of collaboration by the young artists involved. As part of an ongoing commitment to the creative potential of young people, Arnolfini has given the group the time and resources to push their ideas to a really exciting place. In that time, they’ve worked with some incredible artists and creatives including Oliver Sutherland (visual artist whose solo exhibitions include And Then… at The Gallery, Plymouth), Elias Williams (founder of Mandem, Bristol’s online media platform by and for young men of colour), Karanjit Panesar (co-founder of East Bristol Contemporary, an artist-led programme of exhibitions), and Lizi Hoar (co-founder of CHAMP, a Bristol based artist collective). By working with these artists the group have been exploring film making and animation, creating stories and narratives, making virtual 3D landscapes and experimenting with green screen technology, amongst other things.

A Revolution of Discomfort is the first major installation created through Now or Never, Arnolfini’s new creative studio for young people. The project was started to give young people the chance to have a leading voice in culture and the space to grow new ideas of what the world can be. The programme is funded by Future Quest.
