To mark the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, Bristol Museum and Art Gallery are displaying twelve of his finest drawings as part of #Leonardo500 – a national celebration of one of history’s greatest geniuses.

The drawings are from the Royal Collection which contains the world’s finest collection of Leonardo’s works.

From landmark anatomical studies to whimsical pages, the drawings reveal his qualities as a dreamer, note-taker, designer and above all, an insatiably curious observer of the world around him. They are among the most diverse and technically accomplished in the entire history of art.

This exhibition is one of twelve simultaneous shows across the UK. Exhibitions are also taking place in BelfastBirminghamCardiffDerbyGlasgowLeedsLiverpoolManchesterSheffieldSouthampton and Sunderland. These exhibitions will be followed by major displays at The Queen’s Galleries in Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

A number of informal activities will take place on selected dates in the exhibition gallery. All activities are free with exhibition entry. Find out more about these events.

Leonardo Unfinished

Come and embrace your own inner polymath in the knowledge that Leonardo was a genius but he also left loads of works unfinished too…

To complement Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing, three young Bristol creatives – Anika, Marcin and Maisie – have produced Leonardo Unfinished, an accompanying exhibition in response to the drawings. By identifying themes within Leonardo’s work, they have selected objects from across our collections to create an eclectic and compelling manifesto to nurture your inner polymath.
